William Shatner took issue with GOP Senator Ted Cruz for a statement made to The New York Times. Cruz weighed in on the classic “who’s better?” debate between Star Trek Captains James T. Kirk and Jean-Luc Picard. Cruz is clearly a Kirk fan, but not for the reason one would expect:
“Kirk is working class; Picard is an aristocrat. Kirk is a passionate fighter for justice; Picard is a cerebral philosopher. I think it is quite likely that Kirk is a Republican and Picard is a Democrat.”
Yep, Cruz dropped some class warfare into the discussion. Sir Patrick Stewart hasn’t expressed his feelings on Cruz’s analysis, but Shatner expressed his displeasure on Twitter:
Star Trek wasn't political. I'm not political; I can't even vote in the US. So to put a geocentric label on interstellar characters is silly
