The meteoric rise and gradual fall of the singing competition shows has been interesting to watch over the past few years. For a while shows like American Idol, and America’s Got Talent were unstoppable juggernauts and while they still do pretty well, they aren’t quite the same cultural centerpieces like they once were. That doesn’t mean that they’ve stopped, though. Over in the UK, Britain’s Got Talent is rearing up for another season with auditions.
Craig Ball went into his audition with the right idea. What was that idea, you ask? Instead of trying to simply wow the judges with a jaw-dropping performance, which let’s assume they’ll get a whole bunch of in the process, he stood out from the crowd by doing impressions throughout. The impressions ran the gambit from Elmo, Stewey and Peter Griffin to Muppets like Kermit, Ms. Piggy and even Mickey Mouse and Morgan Freeman. Essentially, it was an ensemble cast belting out Miley Cyrus’ Wrecking Ball in spectacular fashion. Still probably not our favorite cover of it, but it’s close.
The crowd was laughing and ever-grimacing judge Simon Cowell not only cracked a smile, but was laughing pretty much throughout, even though he tried to keep a straight face. The best part about this is that he really nails it. I mean, his Gollum impression alone should land him on the show, right?
