Fox Mulder spends much of “Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster,” easily the best of the new X-Files episodes so far, in a graveyard. That, in and of itself, isn’t extraordinary. Mulder seems like the kind of guy who took high school dates to the cemetery. Where do you think he got the flowers?
But there’s a special meaning to the headstone he rests against.
Kim Manners was an in-demand television director (he holds the record for most X-Files episodes directed: 52), who was born on January 13, 1951, and passed away from lung cancer on January 25, 2009. He was frequently heard saying “let’s kick it in the ass” on set, just like the gravestone says.
“It’s really our way of dedicating the episode, if not the show to him,” creator Chris Carter told E! News about the Kim Manners tribute headstone. “It’s funny, I couldn’t imagine doing The X-Files without Kim coming back, but I had to because he’s no longer with us. I wore my little ‘K.M.’ button in his honor and [writer-director Darin Morgan] decided to put his name on a headstone.” (Via)
Carter added that Manners, who also helmed episodes of Supernatural and 21 Jump Street, was “first” among a group of directors, the unsung heroes of the show. They “were responsible for figuring out how to scare us, how to thrill us, how to horrify us and how to make us laugh,” he said.
“Were-Monster” was a great episode befitting a great director.
