Zach Galifianakis is probably the closest thing we have to Andy Kaufman these days — along with the great Nathan Fielder — so when he makes an appearance on a late-night show, it pays to tune in. It’s no Tracy Morgan just wildly riffing on whatever passes into his brain at the moment, but it is pretty funny because Galifianakis is attempting to start a new trend.
Beards were in for a while, but now they’re trash soup. They’re boring as toast. Thick eyebrows is clearly the way to go, with Martin Scorsese being the Leonard Cohen of the movement. It can be natural, it can be fake, or it can be tied to a disease like it is for poor Zach here. He even almost breaks down emotionally while talking about it and trying to remember the name of the medicine. So brave.
Later in his chat with Jimmy Kimmel, we get a little bit of info about Baskets. We’ve already given it our seal, but Galifianakis manages to sell it a bit more by talking about Louie Anderson playing his mother and his co-star Martha Kelly being the worst improv actress in the world. It’d be a death sentence for any other performance, but it seems to work in the clip they preview on the show.
There’s also a bit about his relationship with Louis C.K. and their aborted trip cross country with Louis’ dog. They did Baskets instead, so it evens out.
