Johnny Depp Will Play A Computer Married To Emily Blunt, Rooney Mara, Or Rebecca Hall In ‘Transcendence’

Must be a Windows OS.

Johnny Depp will play a supercomputer imbued with the consciousness of a murdered scientist in Transcendence, The Wrap reports. Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are executive producing and Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister will make his directorial debut. Three actresses are in the running to play Depp’s wife, who uploads his consciousness to the supercomputer.

Deadline reports the three actresses are Emily Blunt, Rooney Mara, and Rebecca Hall. Emily Blunt’s role in All You Need Is Kill may count her out, while Rooney Mara is available and Rebecca Hall will be finished shooting Iron Man 3 soon. Production on Transcendence starts next March.

Producer Andrew Kosove said the Transcendence script includes themes of singularity, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence. The Wrap also obtained the script summary, which Alcon Entertainment cautions is not the final version of the film. That said, let’s spoil the hell out of it anyway.

Three scientists — Max and the husband-and-wife team of Will and Evelyn — have been developing a programming code for the world’s first fully self-aware computer. Depp will play one of the lead scientists, Will. […] A group of anti-technology terrorists assassinate Will, and Evelyn uploads his brain into a prototype supercomputer. Although she at first finds that the experiment seems to have gone wrong, before long, Evelyn finds Will responding in computer form. She goes on to connect Will to the Internet so he can help make further scientific breakthroughs. Will asks Evelyn to connect a microphone and a camera to the computer so he can see and speak to her as well. [The Wrap]

Now here’s the biggest spoiler, although it should be obvious considering the film is called Transcendence. The terrorists eventually destroy the supercomputer. Johnny Depp’s character is assumed dead, because no one in Hollywood understands what the internet is. Surprise ending: there are back-up copies of his consciousness all up in the cloud. Hooray. Jack Sparrow lives forever on Tumblr. Rum and cat GIFs for everyone.
