Wonder Woman Once Ran For President, And A Few More Facts You Might Not Know About Her

Wonder Woman finally debuted in theaters today to an already promising box office start, but long before the heroine was upsetting man-babies and giving us the superhero we need right now, she started fighting evildoers, a career that began over 75 years ago. With a comics history spanning that long, it’s extremely difficult to know everything about Wonder Woman. That’s why HitFix host Miri Jedeikin is here to offer up some facts that every fan should know about Princess Diana.

Going back to the character’s inspiration, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise based on her choice of signature weapon that Wonder Woman was originally tied to the world of BDSM, which was gaining visibility at the time. Her creator, William Moulton Marston, envisioned that Diana had to be bound so she could escape as a kind of “symbolic emancipation.” This led to a light sprinkling of bondage imagery spread throughout the character’s early comics.

It’s impossible for a comic book character that has lasted this long to not go through some farfetched plotlines. Some other facts that the video touches on are Diana’s arcs of willingly giving up her powers and her run for president. Jedeikin also goes into the Wonder Woman pilot from David E. Kelley that’s better off being forgotten, but the less said about that, the better. Let’s just be happy that Wonder Woman is the modern iteration we have for the feminist icon.
