James Wan Teases That ‘Aquaman’ Will Feature ‘Swashbuckling Action,’ Shares The Spirit He’s Aiming For

The standard knock against the recent batch of DC films is that they’re a touch on the dreary side. And by touch, we mean a sledgehammer blow of grim. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea and when Suicide Squad tried to sell something more madcap, audiences were intrigued. Couple that with Justice League looking a bit more relaxed than Batman V. Superman and we might be settling into a new groove of slightly less serious DC movies.

You can count James Wan’s upcoming Aquaman cinematic offering among the DC fare that isn’t entirely in the grip of grittiness. Chatting with Entertainment Tonight at the Australians in Film Awards Gala, the Furious 7 director revealed a bit of detail about the one of the Jason Momoa fronted film.

“I kind of don’t want to give too much away but know this: The spirit that I’m going for is like a classic sort of swashbuckling action adventure, sort of high seas adventure story,” offered the MacGyver reviver. “It’s ultimately a quest story in the spirit of Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Romancing the Stone.”

We’re definitely onboard for that sort of thing and Momoa’s the sort of charming gent that can pull it off on-screen. It’s also an interesting new twist in Wan’s filmography which boasts a tidy collection of impressive horror and action entries to his name. A swashbuckling James Wan movie? Count us in.

Aquaman is currently lined up for a July 2018 release, although Momoa’s sea-friendly hero and Amber Heard’s Mera will be popping up Zack Snyder’s Justice League in November 2017.
