The First Trailer For ‘Logan’ Promises A Dark And Powerful End For The Wolverine

Between suggested plot points, glimpses of a fight’s aftermath, and first looks at many of the film’s characters, the first trailer for Logan is finally here. And boy does it not disappoint, for director James Mangold’s second outing with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine promises to be one of the X-Men cinematic universe’s most ambitious — and most violent — entries to date. (Yes, this judgment even includes Deadpool.)

Accompanied by Johnny Cash’s famous cover of the Nine Inch Nails song “Hurt,” the Logan trailer presents a not-too-distant future in which mutants are “gone now.” The year is 2024, and Jackman’s Logan seems to be one of the few remaining mutants in the world — despite his body showing signs of wear and tear it’s healing factor should have taken care of. Subsequent shots of Patrick Stewart’s aged Professor X, Stephen Merchant’s Caliban, and what appear to be Reavers litter the movie’s apocalyptic landscape with scenes and sequences reminiscent of Mad Max: Fury Road.

And then there’s Laura (Sienna Novikov), a young girl whom the professor describes as being “just like” Logan and in need of their assistance. Cue the villainous, unnamed hordes in hot pursuit, a character with a robotic hand, and numerous money shots of Jackman going feral — claws and all.

Logan hits theaters March 3, 2017.
