Daisy Ridley Would Like Us All To Chill Out About Rey’s Parents

Since Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released rumors and fan theories have spread across the internet as to the identity of Rey’s parents. While we’ll continue to wonder no matter what, Daisy Ridley has mentioned we’ll find out in Star Wars: Episode VIII. Until then? Everyone “chill” please.

Time Out London spoke to Ridley about another upcoming project, The Eagle Huntress, but of course got to chatting about Star Wars as well. She mentioned people’s curiosity about Rey’s background is “a wonderful thing” but perhaps everyone could relax their enthusiasm a bit. “I do find it quite funny that people keep asking about it,” she told Time Out. “Just yesterday a guy asked to take a picture with me, and went ‘Is Luke your Dad?’ And I was like, ‘chill out, you’ll see!'”

Ridley has certainly been asked about this plot point many, many times. Though she’s admitted once where she comes from might not be that important, she did tell Time Out she’d “love to see the look on people’s faces” when information is revealed.

In the discussion of this particular article I’ve seen a lot of headlines inferring Ridley is saying there are clues to her parentage in The Force Awakens itself. While that could very well be true, it’s not explicitly mentioned in the article. Here’s what they wrote:

Ridley has already revealed that in the as-yet-untitled Episode VIII, due in 2017, we’ll learn a lot more about her character Rey’s mysterious backstory. We asked if it’d feel good to get the secret off her chest – and her answer startled us. ‘I thought a lot was answered in “The Force Awakens”,’ she said. ‘Then after the screening I went for a drink with my agent and everyone, and we were chatting away and I realised that oh, in their minds it’s not answered at all!’

They say “get the secret off her chest” after “Rey’s mysterious backstory,” not specifically her parentage. We did of course learn about Rey’s past a bit in The Force Awakens, she was left on Jakku in the care of Unkar Plutt. More of her time there was revealed in the prequel book by Greg Rucka, Before the Awakening, but there’s certainly more to tell as the story unfolds in the trilogy. That said, Ridley also wanted to remind fans, “With answers come more questions.”

Episode VIII is set to hit theaters December 15, 2017.
