Matt Bomer And Kelsey Grammer Are Heading To Amazon For ‘The Last Tycoon’

Prepare the tossed salad and scrambled eggs. Kelsey Grammer has a new TV gig and it’s one he’ll be sharing alongside White Collar star Matt Bomer.

The Hollywood Reporter reports (from Hollywood!) that Amazon has picked up The Last Tycoon and the drama will be making the leap from pilot to a full-on proper series. Loosely based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Love of the Last Tycoon, here’s how THR sums up the program.

“The series revolves around Monroe Stahr (Bomer, Magic Mike, American Horror Story), Hollywood’s first high-profile studio executive in the 1930s as he climbs to the height of power pitting him against his mentor and current head of the studio, the brawny, imposing, charming and vain Pat Brady (Grammer). Brady’s character is based on Hollywood icon Louis B. Mayer. Having come from the streets, Brady has no intention of returning to his misfortune, and is determined to make sure his studio is successful, no matter what personal morals he compromises.”

Who doesn’t enjoy moral entanglements paired with era-specific fashion? MONSTERS THAT’S WHO! (And presumably people that encountered any of the three episodes of The Playboy Club that NBC aired.) Captain Phillips scribe Billy Ray will be playing the role of showrunner with Chris Keyser joining him in that spot.

According to Deadline, news of The Last Tycoon getting picked up as a series is coming at the same time that another Amazon pilot, The Interestings, appeared to be passed over.
