Usually when someone compares a politician to Adolf Hitler on social media, it’s blatant and unapologetic, so seeing an apology for even a tangential comparison is gonna pique my interest.

Below is Rep. Randy Weber’s since-deleted tweet about Barack Obama not showing up to an anti-terrorist rally in Paris.

Even Adolph Hitler thought it more important than Obama to get to Paris. (For all the wrong reasons.) Obama couldn’t do it for right reasons.

And because deleted tweets never truly go away, here is his apology:

I need to first apologize to all those offended by my tweet. It was not my intention to trivialize the Holocaust nor to compare the President to Adolf Hitler. The mention of Hitler was meant to represent the face of evil that still exists in the world today. I now realize that the use of Hitler invokes pain and emotional trauma for those affected by the atrocities of the Holocaust and victims of anti-Semitism and hate.

[…]

The President’s actions or lack thereof is my point of contention.

While I can imagine the Secret Service would rather not send the President to a rally attended by several million people on the fly, even the White House Press Secretary admitted that they should’ve sent someone higher up than a U.S. Ambassador.

The moral of the story here is to stop and think before comparing anything to Hitler. Or just, y’know, don’t.
