Witness Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Esteemed Scientific Explanation Of How ‘Sex In Space’ Works

Neil deGrasse Tyson remains a good sport when it comes to indulging his detractors. He’s given these critical folks some new ammunition with this video about the physics of “Sex in Space.” The popular-science icon regularly conquers the Internet with science. He uses his wild theories to explain everything from a Cincinnati Bengals victory to how Batman can defeat Superman. He can impress his vast knowledge upon any subject.

Now he’s attempting to one-up Bill Nye‘s enthusiastic elaboration of why humans get “horny.” Neil deGrasse Tyson feels he can do better on an episode of StarTalk, so he explained how to get it on in zero gravity. The main issue is the lack of friction, but no worries. He has a solution that arrives with demonstrative hand motions:

“Everything is different if you’re having sex in a weightless environment. You need things like … straps. There are probably some people who are equipped for this … anyway? But I’m just saying, you begin to see the manifestations of Newton’s law of motion. You’re floating in space and then you move towards someone and they just bounce off. And the movement is sort of preserved. There’s no friction, so there you go.

“So if you want to get together and stay together, you need something to keep you together during all the normal body movements that would … characterize … having sex in space. So yeah, just bring a lot of leather belts. Keep things strapped down and you’ll be just fine.”

Yes, just pack a few leather belts, and everything will be okay. He doesn’t elaborate on whether desire is affected by zero gravity, nor did we hear anything about consequences involving inhibited sperm propagation. Nope, he simply zeroed in on the 50 Shades of Neil deGrasse Tyson scenario, and we just have to take his word or book a voyage with Virgin Galactic.

Here’s some more recent wisdom from the man’s Twitter account, which may or may not be relevant to this discussion.
