McDonald’s in Asia is like the Wonka Factory of fast fooderies. They get the most fun stuff like the McChoco Potato, these horrifying Snoopy Buns, concrete-colored buns, AND the most whimsical McDonald’s Next in Hong Kong.
Now, McDonald’s in South Korea is going to start selling beer.
Seriously? The U.S. is like the yellow-vested, red-headed step-child of McDonald’s. Sure, we may have gotten all-day breakfast, but the menu is limited and hello, they get booze! Booze!
A restaurant in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province will begin serving craft beer, which marks the first time alcohol will be served at McDonald’s in Asia. Then, depending on the store’s success, MickyDee’s will open more locations in areas popular with young people in Seoul, as their turnout at the fast-food chain has declined. Hooray, young people! (Maybe now we can go a week without a think piece on “millennials?”)
While beer and wine are already served at some McDonald’s locations around the world — including Germany and France — restaurants in the United States remain limited to soda, iced tea, and guilt-inducing McFlurries.
If McDonald’s hopes to compete with other fast casual eateries, they’ll have to consider bringing the beer to the states. Chipotle, Sonic, Burger King, and even Starbucks in various locations serve alcohol.
So, why not hop on the bandwagon and give young people what they want? There are a few snags, namely that the drinking age in the U.S. is 21 and a large portion of employees aren’t old enough to serve, let alone drink alcohol.
At this point, we just have to hope the changes in South Korea are so wildly successful that they’ll make the U.S. reconsider the drinking age in the name of all that is fast-food consumerism.
