The ‘House Of Cards’ Twitter Account Trolls David Cameron Over His ‘Panama Papers’ Revelation

Aside from Icelandic Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the so-called “Panama Papers” leak also targeted British Prime Minister David Cameron, who admitted to having a stake worth over $40,000 in his billionaire father’s offshore investment fund. The revelation of Cameron’s involvement, which preceded his tenure as prime minister, is especially prescient as the conservative leader has repeatedly campaigned against such practices. Hence why the Twitter account for the Netflix political series House of Cards decided to throw some friendly shade Cameron’s way.

In the ninth episode of the second season, “Chapter 22,” Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) noted a rather provocative idea about politics and power while addressing the fourth wall:

“Do you think I’m a hypocrite? Well, you should. I wouldn’t disagree with you. The road to power is paved with hypocrisy. And casualties. Never regret.”

With this quote in mind, the House of Cards Twitter account retweeted a link to the Independent‘s article about Cameron’s past claims and how they didn’t match with what the “Panama Papers” had divulged.

This was quickly followed by the account’s discovery of a tweet Cameron posted in May 2015, in which the prime minister stated that “if you have done the right thing — worked, saved and paid your taxes — you should be rewarded, not punished.” Hence the deliciously appropriate GIF the account used to reply directly to Cameron’s account.

Let this be a lesson to Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin), whose communications department tried to shame President Barack Obama with Frank Underwood quotes and GIFs — despite the speaker’s admitted distaste for the show. When using a fake show about politics to cast shame on actual politicians, it’s best to let the professionals do it.
