Joe Rogan just heard the news of Conor McGregor’s supposed retirement, and like many others around the MMA-verse, he doesn’t believe it. But once you get to thinking about the 27-year-old McGregor retiring with millions in the bank and health intact, it starts to make sense. He was rocked by Nate Diaz — the first time in his career — and after witnessing a horrible tragedy in the death of Joao Carvalho, perhaps something clicked and he decided it wasn’t worth it.
Rogan goes from dismissive to empathetic, and maybe agreeing with a shocking move like retirement in just a few sentences.
“Ah he’s trolling. F*ck yeah. He’s decided to “retire young” which means like, 34. Listen man, unless he got headkicked today and knocked into oblivion, the idea that he’s going out on a loss like that to Nate Diaz. He’s got plenty of cash. If he wanted to retire young and step away, I guarantee you he made somewhere in the neighborhood of $5 million on the Jose Aldo fight. He probably made more for the Nate Diaz fight.
Conor had actually thought about retiring from MMA before he got the call to go to the UFC. There was a point in time when he had some friends who were experiencing some serious health issues from fighting.”
“There’s no way he’d do it like this.”
Or would he? As fast and as high as his star rose, McGregor marches to the beat of his own drummer. Maybe this is real, or it’s just an elaborate troll-job to keep him in the limelight while Jon Jones and Mighty Mouse Johnson struggle to keep people interested for UFC 197.
