With a character that could have easily been dismissed as old-fashioned and corny, Chris Evans (and the Russo Brothers) has turned Captain America into a truly integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If Tony Stark is the brains — and sass — of the operation, Steve Rogers is definitely the heart.
While he previously expressed a desire to pass off Cap’s shield when his six film contract was up, he’s changed his tune lately. He’s been on the Captain America: Civil War press tour lately, and in a recent interview with Collider, he’s reiterating his willingness to stick with the MCU.
“It is so funny thinking about how fast time has moved. We started this in 2010, and six years is gone in the blink of an eye. In the beginning it was so terrifying, and now you’re almost scared… I’m scared to walk away. I’m scared to not have one of these coming. For the past six, theres always been ‘next year, we start on that one,’ and it’s been wonderful. Especially because the movies are so good. When you make good movies, who wants to stop doing that? So, I don’t know. We’ll see.”
Considering the meteoric success of the Captain America franchise, both critical and commercial, it’s understandable why Evans would be changing his tune. Captain American: The Winter Soldier is widely regarded as one of the best Marvel films ever, and early reviews for Civil War are no less than glowing. When you find a good gig, why not stick with it? Still, in the comics, both Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson take up the Captain’s mantle at one point or another, which Evans acknowledges, so we’ll have to wait and see whether or not the MCU follows suit.
