Disney may have the streaming service everyone is talking about as D23 continues this weekend, but Netflix is striking back in a huge way for fans of prestige dramas. According to a report, the Breaking Bad movie is extremely real, very much done and coming to Netflix this fall.
The New York Times‘ Dave Itzkoff reported on Saturday that the Breaking Bad movie is, indeed, done and is coming a lot sooner than we thought. That’s right: Bob Odenkirk was right when he said the movie was already in the can. It’s done, and ready for streaming eyes.
The movie will hit Netflix on October 11. The news first broke in a New York Times article detailing plans for the release, and Netflix later dropped the trailer, apparently a few days earlier than expected.
On Monday, Netflix plans to announce that it will release a new “Breaking Bad” movie that will center on Pinkman, the excitable meth cook played by Paul, who was last seen in the TV series speeding off in a stolen Chevrolet El Camino to parts unknown.
The film, called “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie,” was written and directed by Vince Gilligan, the creator of “Breaking Bad,” and will be released on Netflix on Oct. 11. The film is also expected to be broadcast at a later date on AMC, the cable network where the TV series was originally shown from 2008 to 2013.
The trailer shows people asking Skinny Pete in a dark room where Jessie Pinkman went, but they don’t get many answers from the latter’s former friend.
“I have no idea where he is,” Skinny Pete says. “But yo, even if I did, I wouldn’t tell you.”
It’s clear there would be some incentive to give up some information, but that won’t happen here.
“Because I’ve been watching the news, same as everybody else,” Skinny Pete says. “I’ve seen that little cage of his they kept him in. I heard about all they did to him to make sure he kept cooking. So sorry, I don’t know what to tell you. No way I help you people put Jessie Pinkman back inside a cage.”
Information may be scarce. But we do, however, get a title card for the movie.
The Times’ report includes an interview with Aaron Paul, who plays Jessie Pinkman. And though it is extremely light on details, Paul seems thrilled that the movie is happening.
“It’s a chapter of Breaking Bad that I didn’t realize that I wanted,” Paul said. “And now that I have it, I’m so happy that it’s there.”
Paul’s enthusiasm is obvious. But what isn’t is what will actually happen in the film, who will appear alongside Paul and what viewers should expect. Here’s what Netflix shared about what will happen in the movie.
“In the wake of his dramatic escape from captivity, Jesse must come to terms with his past in order to forge some kind of future.”
Paul said he’s “forbidden” from saying anything about what happens in the movie, including whether Bryan Cranston will play a role at all. But the secrecy will only add to the hype around it before its release. He did describe how he found out about the movie idea: Breaking Bad showrunner Vince Gilligan called him to talk about how to approach the show’s 10th anniversary and mentioned he had an idea for what happened next with Jessie after he escaped the Nazi compound.
“At the very end of the conversation,” Paul said, “he mentioned that he had an idea of where to take it from here, and he wanted to hear my thoughts on it. I quickly told Vince that I would follow him into a fire.”
Still, Paul apparently was skeptical about picking up a story that was left off so beautifully, and one that fans and critics alike praised. Not every show is so lucky to end on such a high note in the minds of so many, but Paul said when he saw the script for El Camino he knew it would be worth it.
“I couldn’t speak for a good 30, 60 seconds,” Paul told The Times. “I was just lost in my thoughts. As the guy who played the guy, I was so happy that Vince wanted to take me on this journey.”
If Paul is happy, it’s likely that Breaking Bad fans will be happy, too. It’s been six years since the show ended, and Better Call Saul has been a hit as well. But that, too, is coming to and end. At least now we’ll see where Jessie’s story may end, too.
