The “Heroes v Aliens’ DC superhero crossover was a big success for The CW, even if Supergirl wasn’t truly a part of it. But as it turns out, the repercussions of the event may be felt in National City when the Dominators make another appearance. Plus the classic DC Comics character Mr. Mxyzptlk is coming up after the midseason break!
With the holidays upon us, a lot of The CW shows are going into their midseason breaks after this week, but their superhero shows have been extra exciting lately. Arrow had an unusual yet excellent 100th episode last week. The Flash looks to be going bigger and bigger with each new story. And Legends of Tomorrow had its best ratings ever with the crossover. Supergirl, whose midseason finale was last week’s “Medusa,” may not have had much on the actual show regarding the crossover but will get a chance to continue the action next year.
EW.com reports the Dominators, the alien threat that was a huge revelation to Earth 1, will turn up in National City and an Earth where aliens are commonplace. “I will say this is not the last you’ve seen on the Dominators,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg told EW after the crossover aired. “The Dominators will return on Supergirl later this season.” The interesting thing to note is Kara will have had experience with them already, but this multiverse’s Dominators may not have had experience with her.
But next year Kara is also going to have trouble of a very different sort. It seems as if trickster imp Mr. Mxyzptlk is coming to town. The CW confirmed his appearance in 2017 to ComicBook.com, though other than the fact he’ll appear in two episodes, we’re not sure what to expect. Could this be their easy way to pull off that musical crossover with The Flash they’ve previously announced?
Mr. Mxyzptlk isn’t one of DC’s most well-known characters, but I suppose he can be considered a fan-favorite (Oddly enough he doesn’t come up in searches of DCComics.com at the moment). He’s mainly a Superman villain and a pretty powerful one at that considering he can alter reality at whim. He hails from the fifth-dimension and is perceived to have “magical” powers to those in our dimension. The only way to stop him is to get him to say or spell his name backward. Ahh, comics. While Mr. Mxyzptlk can be very dangerous, his schemes are usually of the more playful, mischievous type. I actually had a wild idea earlier this year that included the trickster, that the next Superman film should utilize him to bring some fun back into the DC film universe.
Mr. Mxyzptlk has been adapted into animation many times but has also appeared in live-action. He was played by Michael J. Pollard on Superboy/The Adventures of Superboy, Howie Mandel on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and Trent Ford on Smallville. How The CW’s Supergirl will present him is anyone’s guess, not to mention how they’ll end up pronouncing the name. Anyone you have in mind to play him?
