As the “art studio” in the basement of the childhood home has probably shown you, the Fifty Shades series knows how to get into the minds, hearts, and groins of a certain segment of the public. BDSM isn’t a kinky fringe part of the mainstream sex in media buffet anymore. It’s in the “art studio” at your parents house and on their laptop. And their phone. And their tablet.
The upcoming Fifty Shades Darker has managed to crank out a trailer that’s been an absolute smash online. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal claims that the new trailer was viewed 114 million times in the first 24 hours since its release. That impressive total places Fifty Shades Darker at the top when it comes to the highest single day view total for a trailer, topping the 112 million mark set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. If you have a lightsaber or a sex mask in your trailer, there’s a strong chance people will hit up a platform to see it.
Fifty Shades Darker will feature Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan returning as the leads, although there’s a bit of an overhaul behind the scenes. Director Sam Taylor-Johnson and screenwriter Kelly Marcel will not be sticking around from the first film, so James Foley (Glengarry Glen Ross, The Chamber) will helm this go-around with Niall Leonard, husband of Fifty Shades author E.L. James, penning the script. The motion picture is set to arrive in theaters on February 10.
