On Wednesday, WWE.com announced that Alberto Del Rio has been suspended for 30 days as a result of his first violation of the company’s Wellness Policy. This is the second high-profile suspension WWE has issued in the past two months, following Roman Reigns’ Wellness violation that ended just before Battleground in July. Del Rio’s suspension will be effective beginning on Thursday, August 18.
Del Rio just appeared on Tuesday night’s episode of Smackdown Live, where he lost to John Cena in the main event. Reports have strongly indicated that Del Rio has been very unhappy since his return to the company last year, and that he could be exercising an opt-out clause in his contract as early as September. He has also been in a well-publicized relationship with fellow WWE employee Paige, although the two were put on separate brands as a result of the recent WWE Draft.
Perhaps this suspension will hasten Del Rio’s exit from the company, although he is likely to fulfill all contractual obligations he has remaining. We will keep you updated with any further developments.
