Jim Ross still has it. His recent return to the wrestling commentary booth at Wrestle Kingdom 9 was well received, with him and Matt Striker of all people forming a surprisingly cohesive until. As our own Austin Heiberg laid out, Striker would take the baton when the action got too fast for JR’s old brain to handle, and JR would BAH GAWD over most of Striker’s more absurd commentary, so it worked nicely.
Well, it sounds like Jim Ross and Striker may become a regular team, because the word is good ol’ JR may be joining Lucha Underground on a full-time basis. This information comes from Konnan’s podcast, who is basically never wrong when it comes to Lucha-related news, although he did note that JR hasn’t signed a contract yet, and that he wasn’t sure what the exact make-up of the announce team would be. They might do a three-man booth with JR, Striker and Vampiro, or they might do rotating teams of two. If JR accepts the job, he’d also announce AAA’s English-language pay-per-views.
The prospect of Jim Ross doing commentary for a Lucha promotion is a little scary – him calling every move Jeff Hardy ever did a Whisper in the Wind comes to mind – but I think the “Striker handles the moves, JR covers the story and passion” set-up should work pretty well. Who’s looking forward to Lucha Underground getting a little BBQ sauce infusion?
