Love it or hate it, you can’t deny that the character of Broken Matt Hardy has been one of the most creative inventions of 2016 when it comes to the world of professional wrestling. There’s his unusual faces, his attempt at eating an audience member, the absurd brilliance of the Final Deletion, and its even more over-the-top sequel, DELETE or Decay.
Now even though Hardy himself came out last month and said he doesn’t think Vince McMahon would be able to handle his “broken universe,” all that could be changing: According to Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter (via Wrestling Inc.), WWE has actually sent out feelers to see if the former ECW, U.S., Cruiserweight, Hardcore, European and eight-time Tag Team champion would be interested in coming back to Stamford after his TNA contract runs out next spring. What’s even more surprising is the person expressing said interest is Executive Vice President of Talent, Live Events and Creative Triple H — apparently he didn’t mind Hardy’s sick burn on Twitter earlier this year.
“With WWE there’s the killer schedule which probably isn’t the best thing for him physically right now,” Meltzer says. “Granted, if something happens to TNA, that equation changes because he’s loaded with ideas for his character and he would need television to get them over.”
Hardy, who has not competed in a WWE ring in six years, is arguably at his biggest creative peak since Matt Hardy V1.0 taught us all sorts of Matt Facts back in the day. It would be awesome to see him get one more run in WWE — and it probably won’t hurt that he predicted CM Punk’s defeat in UFC 203. Not that WWE is holding a grudge against their former straight-edge superstar, though …
