Kevin Owens, the longest-reigning WWE Universal Champion in history, was the latest guest on this week’s “Off the Top Rope” segment on ESPN SportsCenter. He addressed Triple H helping him win said title, talked about his (wonderful family), elaborated on Owen Hart being his inspiration, and once again stressed that his dream WrestleMania matchup would be against The Beast Incarnate, Brock Lesnar. It’s a match we’ve already been deprived of once, but as long as Owens keeps beating that drum, we’ll keep paying attention to its sweet, sweet song.
“I want Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania. It’s as simple as that.”
Kevin Owens: believer in the economy of words.
It’s not surprising that Owens (one of the biggest bruisers in WWE) wants a match against THE biggest dog in the yard (sorry, Roman Reigns), Lesnar is the dream opponent for pretty much any wrestler in the business. Heck, Owens isn’t even the first wrestler to suggest a dream Mania match against Lesnar this week. But given Owens is now a legit main eventer (or is at least the top guy on Raw for the time being), he certainly has perhaps the strongest case for a potential Lesnar opponent at the biggest show of the year.
While everything we’ve heard indicates the only plan in place for next year’s WrestleMania is a blowoff match between Seth Rollins and Triple H, that’s unlikely to be a match for the WWE Universal Championship. Will Owens still be the champ at that time? Between Lesnar, a singles match against Sami Zayn and a potential title defense against a returning Finn Bálor, Owens will certainly have no shortage of options when Mania rolls around. But Lesnar might be the most intriguing of all.
