Sunday night’s WWE Money in the Bank pay-per-view in Las Vegas was touted as being “the greatest Money in the Bank ever,” although we’ll probably have to fully appraise that boast with some serious hindsight. Nevertheless, the evening more or less revolved around the eponymous Money in the Bank ladder match, which guarantees the winner a world title shot any time they want it within the next year.
The six-man match between Dean Ambrose, Kevin Owens, Chris Jericho, Cesaro, Sami Zayn and Alberto Del Rio was just as much of a spectacle as fans anticipated, with ladders getting involved early and mayhem ensuing in short order. When all was said and done, the match came down to Owens and Ambrose, the two men considered the favorites to win. They had a slugfest at the top of the ladder, which Ambrose was able to get the better of. Owens fell off the ladder, onto another ladder, allowing Ambrose to reach up and capture the briefcase.
This is the third Money in the Bank ladder match Ambrose has been in and this is his first win. Of course, Money in the Bank winners have a notoriously successful track record. Of the previous 16 MITB briefcase winners, only two have failed to capture a world title when chasing it in.
