Between the body counts, beauticians and beautifully weird UFOs, the Fargo anthology series adapted from Joel and Ethan Coen’s 1996 film by creator and showrunner Noah Hawley has been everything we’ve wanted (and more) out of a television show. And now that Trainspotting and Star Wars alum Ewan McGregor has been cast as the lead for the third season, yet another batch of bonkers crime stories from rural Minnesota are about to break our minds.
Especially because, according to the official character description(s) published by Entertainment Weekly, McGregor isn’t just playing the lead character. He’s playing the lead characters. Brothers, to be precise, and not twin siblings at that:
Emmit Stussy is the Parking Lot King of Minnesota. A handsome, self-made, real estate mogul and family man, Emmit sees himself as an American success story. His slightly younger brother, Ray Stussy, on the other hand is more of a cautionary tale. Balding, pot-bellied, Ray is the kind of guy who peaked in high school. Now a parole officer, Ray has a huge chip on his shoulder about the hand he’s been dealt, and he blames his brother, Emmit, for his misfortunes.
It’s going to be a while before the first images of a makeup-drenched, balding prosthesis-wearing McGregor show up online because Fargo‘s third season doesn’t go into production, via MGM Television and FX productions, until late 2016. The first episode is slated to premiere sometime in 2017. However, the fact that the man who once climbed out a toilet for director Danny Boyle is willing to play a character known as “the Parking Lot King of Minnesota” makes it all well worth the wait.
