With word that Jon Stewart will be stepping down from his post behind the desk of The Daily Show, many saw fit to head to social media and pay respects in between making jokes. There’s a lot of speculation about who will step in to take over, but for now it’s time to let it sink in that we won’t have Jon Stewart to navigate through the silliness of political hypocrisy.
Below are some of the more humorous and nice tributes to this point, with more sure to come after the announcement is official tonight. We’ll update this as it goes, but use this as springboard for your own tribute. First up is a who’s who of Hollywood and comedy:

Jon Stewart quitting? Good timing. He was beginning to be eclipsed by John Oliver. This way, he can leave on a high.

And Daily Show creator Lizz Winstead had a reaction, seeing how she produced Stewart’s talk show over at MTV and laid out some of the key supporting squad (Colbert, Lewis Black) that would bolster the show when he took it over:
I have been passed out on cold medicine and just woke up. Anything happen while I was out?

And finally there’s this last Tweet from Steven A. Cook that’s my favorite to this point:

Devastated that Jon Stewart is standing down. The thin comic line is breached and the barbarians are upon us.

I have no real memory of presidential election cycles without @TheDailyShow and Jon Stewart – such a sad day and truly the end of an era.
