A New ‘Star Wars’ Theory Argues Rey Has A Dark Family History

Just who Rey’s parents are, and why she was dumped on Jakku, is a point of relentless fan speculation. Is she the daughter of Luke? Is she a lost Fett? Is she just completely unrelated and the whole thing is a coincidence? Recently, though, a fan theory is making the rounds, and it’s fairly credible: Rey’s parents matter less than just what her family lineage might be.

You can wade through the whole twelve-minute video detailing the theory for yourself, but the gist of it is that Rey is the descendant of the Emperor himself, Palpatine. The granular “evidence” is a bit of a reach in some places, but it’s worth pointing out two things: It makes sense in the timeline, and it’s easy to figure out why a relative of the Emperor would be dumped on an interplanetary backwater.

Without making your eyes glaze over, the short of it is that Palpatine, before he became that creepy Republic-wrecking wizard, was part of a rich noble house on Naboo, and was pretty much the spoiled jerk you’d expect a guy like him to be as a kid. And, of course, he had siblings, so it’s credible that even if he, a rich powerful old guy, didn’t attract some equally unpleasant woman to reproduce with, his family kept up the genetic side. As for why Rey got ditched, it’s difficult to think of a family loathed more in the galaxy than that of the guy who crushed it under his heel. The Hitlers weren’t exactly getting a lot of party invitations after the war, either. Any sort of young “empress” would be either a valuable political pawn or a huge target, and stranding her would be a lot safer than the alternative.

This doesn’t mean Rey is a Sith, of course. The Dark Side is about moral failings, not genetics. But Episode VIII might have some unpleasant things to reveal about her family history. We’ll find out December 2017.
