Sigourney Weaver Sounds Like She’s Having A Great Time As A Marvel Villain

The day we found out the magnificent Sigourney Weaver was joining the Marvel universe was a great one. While Netflix’s The Defenders is currently in production, everyone involved is still staying mum on which villain Weaver is playing. But that doesn’t mean she’s staying completely silent.

Fandango spoke with the actor who actually has a lot on her plate at the moment. There’s the Neill Blomkamp Alien film that will hopefully happen eventually, the four Avatar sequels, and the film she’s currently promoting, J.A. Bayona’s A Monster Calls. She’ll be up against Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Mike Colter (Luke Cage), and Finn Jones (Iron Fist) on the Netflix/Marvel team-up series, The Defenders, and had some interesting things to say about them.

“Basically, the four heroes come up against this really nice woman, who I’m playing,” she told them. This just makes me think she’ll be the worst villain yet. I love it. She added, “To me they’re not superheroes; they’re people with a gift. It’s just a different scale, and I’m really enjoying the scale of it. The apocalyptic thing is a little harder for me to understand.”

It seems Weaver appreciates the street-level aspect of the Netflix series rather than the world-ending escapades on the big screen. In fact, Fandango asked if she’d be interested in a Marvel film role but she told them she’s happy where she is.

Weaver also told them filming has been a lot of fun so far and that the cast is wonderful. She also enjoys them filming in her birthplace, New York. “It’s been a blast and I really love my character,” she said. “I love the shows, too, which I wasn’t familiar with before doing this. A real love letter to New York.”

Iron Fist is next to premiere though and we just got some new images from that series the other day.
