Adam Sandler Says The Whole ‘Ridiculous Six’ Controversy Is Just One Big ‘Misunderstanding’

Back in April, a dozen Native American actors walked off the set of Adam Sandler’s Ridiculous Six. The demonstration was in protest of jokes they felt were offensive to Native American culture, such as the naming of characters like “Beaver’s Breath” and “Wears No Bra.” Since then, both Netflix (where the film will debut later this year) and Vanilla Ice (who, like many other celebrities, appears in the movie) have shown their support for Sandler.

Now, the comedian himself has spoken out in defense of the Ridiculous Six, claiming that people had misconstrued the nature of the project. “It was just a misunderstanding and once the movie is out will be cleared up,” Sandler told the Associated Press on Saturday. According to ScreenCrush, he also met with some of the disgruntled actors to clear the air regarding the real intentions of the film:

“I talked to some of the actors on the set who were there and let them know that the intention of the movie is 100 percent to just make a funny movie. It’s really about American Indians being good to my character and about their family and just being good people. There’s no mocking of American Indians at all in the movie. It’s a pro-Indian movie. So hopefully when people see it — whoever was offended on set and walked out, I hope they realize that, and that’s it. It was kinda taken out of context.”

Sandler’s comments echo those of Netflix, as the streaming giant said that “the movie has ridiculous in the title for a reason: because it is ridiculous.” They added, “It is a broad satire of Western movies and the stereotypes they popularized, featuring a diverse cast that is not only part of — but in on — the joke.”

The Ridiculous Six is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on December 11.
