David Bowie Announces First New Album In 10 Years

By / 01.08.13

How thoughtful of David Bowie. Today’s his 66th birthday, but instead of the former-Ziggy Stardust expecting us to deliver him a present, like a six-pack of giant light bulbs so he can spell his name out wherever he pleases or a rainbow-colored talking horse, he one-upped THE WORLD and gave us the best gift of all, to be unwrapped in March: a new album, The Next Day, his first since 2003’s Reality. Says the Guardian:

David Bowie has celebrated his 66th birthday by releasing a new single, Where Are We Now?, ahead of his first new album in 10 years.

The track was put on sale in the iTunes store in 119 countries on Tuesday morning and a video preview posted on his website, which has been relaunched for the occasion. His 30th studio recording, The Next Day, would be released in March, said the Iso/Columbia record company. (Via)

There are, adds the Guardian, “no plans for interviews or live dates,” so for now, it’s just the album (produced by Tony Visconti), which is perfectly fine; no one could have expected even this much, considering Bowie’s self-imposed pseudo-retirement since his heart surgery in 2004. In other words:

Welcome back, Bowie.
