Last year, we were all forced to endure the music video for Pharrell Williams’ “Happy,” an ebullient ear worm of song whose only virtue was that it inspired “Tacky” from Weird Al Yankovic. This time around, Pharrell is back and he’s taken to the forest to sing a song about love that is a little less lively than the “GIRL” album’s debut single. Which makes sense when you consider the overt song of summerness of “Happy” and observe the autumnal setting (big sweaters, interpretive dancing where people act like leaves in the wind) of the “Gust of Wind” video. Even Pharrell’s new hat choice is a little more reserved.
Joining Pharrell in this endeavor is Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright, two massive rock heads that represent Daft Punk, the Guilty Remnant City Dancers from The Leftovers, and a seeming tribute to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Sadly, Wright’s usual partners in crime, Nick Frost and Simon Pegg, are nowhere to be seen. That is, unless they are actually Daft Punk. I am prepared to believe that they are.
