UPDATE: Haim shared a new track from Something To Tell You called “Want You Back.” Check that out below.

Haim took a long while between their star-making debut Days Are Gone and their upcoming album Something To Tell You. According to the sisters themselves, that’s how they want it, taking the time to write all the songs themselves and polish them until they shine. But for a while, the group behind hits like “Forever” and “The Wire” were having trouble getting back into the swing of writing. But they found inspiration in an odd place, the Amy Schumer movie Trainwreck.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, the group said that the weight of thinking in terms of a follow-up album had frozen the group. But Danielle and Alana Haim described how a song that didn’t make the cut for the Trainwreck soundtrack kickstarted their second release.

“[It was] a homework assignment,” Danielle said. We got a call to write a song for Trainwreck and we were like, ‘Let’s see if we can do it.'”

“Suddenly, there wasn’t this daunting, abstract, second-record weight hanging over us,” Alana said. “It was, ‘You have a week…We got back to just ‘write how you’re feeling. After that, we wrote hundreds of songs. It was like vomit.”

While Trainwreck ultimately passed on the song “Little Of Your Love,” Haim used it as a launchpad for their new album (and incorporated it into their live sets). This overlooked track eventually led to songs like the just-released “Right Now” which Alana described as a female-centered version of the Tom Petty kiss-off “You Got Lucky.”

“I grew up listening to Tom Petty’s ‘You Got Lucky,’ where the whole theme is, ‘You’re lucky to be with me,'” Alana said. “I never really heard a song that said that from a woman’s perspective. Being a woman in a power position and dating someone, in my experience, is hard. You need a man who’s strong enough, to paraphrase Sheryl Crow.”

You can check out the results of that experiment right here, in a video filmed by Paul Thomas Anderson. And take a look at the rest of the interview over at Rolling Stone. Haim also shared their new track “Want You Back,” the second single from their upcoming album. Check it out below.
