Did Starling Marte Just Execute The Most Casual Outfield Assist Of All Time?

To answer the question posed in the headline: Yes. Or, at the very least, it’s near the top.

It’s hard to tell whether Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Starling Marte was frighteningly uninterested or insanely confident in his abilities (maybe a mixture of both), but he recorded possibly the most nonchalant outfield assist in the history of baseball on Tuesday night in Miami.

Marte gathered up a third-inning base hit by Adeiny Hechavarria in the left-field corner, saw Hechavarria rounding second in an attempt to leg out a triple and calmly flicked the ball to third, where Hechavarria was tagged out. To say that Marte stayed cool under pressure would be the understatement of the century.

As for Hechavarria, he might want to take some notes from Marte and take it down a notch. There was no way that was ever going to be a triple. Can you imagine how out he would have been if Marte actually showed a little bit of hustle?
