Floyd Mayweather Continues To Hype Conor McGregor Match: ‘I Think The Fight Will Happen’

The UFC and Conor McGregor have been making a lot of hoopla over their ability to sign a deal for the Irish superstar to fight Floyd Mayweather. That, of course, leaves out the difficult part: reaching an agreement with the notoriously fickle Floyd Mayweather. For his part, Mayweather has been largely silent for the past few weeks as McGregor awaited the birth of his firstborn child.

But following a fight in the UK for the IBF featherweight title featuring Floyd’s protege Gervonta Davis, Mayweather recommitted himself to the fight.

“I had a great career and my career may not be over,” he said. “Number 50 may be against Conor McGregor. We’ll just wait and see.”

“I think the fight will happen,” Mayweather said later. “We have to give the people what they want to see. If he signed a contract, when I get back in the US, I’ll communicate with my team and get Al, Leonard, and Steve on a call, what’s our next move. Most likely when we do make a move it’ll be a huge one. You already know, when Floyd Mayweather fights, it’s history. The only thing I’m doing now is chasing my own records.”

Mayweather also shot down calls for him to face Gennady Golovkin instead.

“If I do fight, it’s a 90% chance it’s against Conor McGregor,” Mayweather said. “The only fight that makes sense to me is Conor McGregor and it’s possible this fight could be made quickly … Conor McGregor is a professional and a stand-up fighter. He kicks ass in the Octagon while I kick ass in the boxing ring. At the end of the day, it’s all ass kicking.”

Indeed it will be … most likely all ass kicking by Mayweather, which is why the fight is likely to come together much easier than past superfights. The Manny Pacquiao bout took six years to come together, but Mayweather is already chomping at the bit to dismantle the MMA fighter in a boxing ring. Word from one of his training partners was he originally wanted the fight to go down in May … possibly to refill his coffers after being scammed, or possibly because he wants to buy a basketball team. Who knows with these crazy multi-millionaire types.

But as usual, we gotta repeat it: this fight is looking like it’s going to happen, and soon.
