Pop stars and rock icons alike have spent the week mourning the loss of David Bowie. But, perhaps, none of the tributes so far have been as fitting as the one from the pop star who took Bowie’s constant reinvention and love of stage personas most to heart: Madonna.
Madge talked about how Bowie personally affected her life before covering “Rebel, Rebel” at a Rebel Heart tour stop in Houston.
“If you haven’t heard about David Bowie, then look him up, motherf*ckers. He was one of the geniuses in the music industry, one of the greatest singer-songwriters of the 20th century and he changed my life when I went to see him in concert in Detroit. He showed me that it was okay to be different. He was the first rebel heart that I laid eyes on.”
After the intro, Madonna stomped around the stage performing Bowie’s 1974 hit while images of Bowie throughout his career appeared on a screen behind her. The song ended with Madonna on her knees while a photo of Bowie emblazoned with the word “REBEL” stayed on the screen.
