Saudi Men Launch Facebook Campaign To Issue Beat-Downs To Women Who Drive

Oh ladies of Saudi Arabia. You guys have it so good. You never really have to worry about what to wear and you can go outside to check the mail without having your face made-up or anything like that, thanks to those convenient, flesh-hiding burqas you’re required to wear. And by law you get driven everywhere, by manly men! So you’re free to catch up on the latest issue of People or play Words With Friends while traveling to the market and whatnot.

But you guys just had to go and rock the boat, didn’t you? You just couldn’t leave well enough alone. You want to defy the Saudi law making it illegal for women to drive and actually get behind the wheel and drive the car to the market. And for that, some Saudi men are petitioning others, on Facebook, to put their proverbial foot down on this assault on traditional Saudi values, and issue beatings to women who dare to drive.

A campaign has been launched on Facebook calling for men to beat Saudi women who drive their cars in a planned protest next month against the ultra-conservative kingdom’s ban on women taking the wheel.

The page, titled “The Iqal Campaign: June 17 for preventing women from driving,” refers to the Arabic name for the cord used to hold on the traditional headdress worn by many men in the Gulf, advocating the cord be used to hit women who dare to drive.

It has drawn over 6,000 “likes” on the popular social networking website.

Some on the page proposed distributing boxes of Iqals to youths and encouraging them use them to hit women who participate in the June 17 protest.

A Saudi-American news site writes that the Facebook page, which I can’t seem to access for some reason, states, “We warn women against adopting Western attitudes and concepts and against a large increase in road accidents in case women are allowed to drive cars.”

You see ladies, this is all about protecting you all from yourselves. Why can’t you just see that?
