Louis C.K. is trying to take the next steps in his, well, whatever he’s doing. That includes doing interviews where he tries to make sure everyone knows just how tough the last year or so has been for him as his sexual improprieties were made public.
Louis C.K. was accused of masturbating in front of women without their consent. The fallout of those accusations actually getting some attention was the cancelation of one of his movies shortly before its release date and a general shunning of C.K. publicly. But recently he’s taken to doing standup at New York City venues, prompting some people to walk out altogether.
The owner of the Comedy Cellar has explained why he’s let C.K. back into his establishment to perform, but he’s also popped up at other venues in the city according to LaughSpin.
“Good to be here even though some of you might not like me,” C.K. said during his set at Caroline’s according to the website. “All he said was he ‘took time off because…it’s good to take time off.’”
The site also reported that the comedian finally has addressed why he’s had to take so much time off in the first place. But it’s a development that’s happened over the last few days of his routines taking shape.
On Sunday night “he looked frightened before he went on,” according to the source. He didn’t get huge applause, but he did just okay. “I couldn’t listen to the words because I’m like, ‘Come on bro, really? You’re not going to talk about it?’ It was insane.”
In the span of a few days, C.K. apparently addressed his bad year and claimed he’s lost $35 million this year as well.
Something shifted Wednesday night. “He was much more confident,” says the source. Castillo says he opened with, “It’s been a weird year” (understatement). He continued talking about how he’s been to “Hell and back”—joking that while he was in Hell he met Hitler. Multiple comedians hanging out that night say he seemed more authentic and real. From the source, his Wednesday set addressed getting booed in the streets and how everyone hates him. “I lost $35 million in an hour.” This audience apparently loved it way more than the unrealistically guarded set just a few days prior—though the comics hanging out were laughing harder than the audience, says the source.
Whether anyone there has sympathy for him for his “weird year” isn’t exactly clear from the report, but it is evident that C.K. is really mounting a standup comeback. The comedian thinks enough time has passed and that people will welcome him back into the entertainment industry. At the very least, club owners will let him back on stage. But actually admitting what he did and paying penance for his sexual misdeeds is much different than just mentioning how much money it’s cost him this year.
