‘Obduction,’ From The ‘Myst’ Team, Debuts Its First Mysterious Trailer

The Rand brothers, and their company Cyan, recently had a successful Kickstarter for Obduction, a spiritual successor to Myst. Usually Kickstarted games take a while to arrive, but credit where it’s due, a little over two years after they got the money, Cyan not only has a first trailer for the finished product, but a release date on the schedule.

It looks quite good, of course, and makes good use of Unreal Engine 4. The plot is largely kept mysterious, but the basic concept is explained in the trailer. You’re a human who got transported to an alien planet filled with stuff pulled from Earth, and your goal is get back, presumably by solving a bunch of very abstract puzzles. And now the Rands have a physics engine, so yeah, your brain is likely going to get a workout.

Obduction is currently slated for a PC release in June, but don’t be surprised if that changes in short order. Sony, in particular, has made a habit of buying the rights to PC games and paying the costs to port them to the PS4, and it has a taste for oddball adventure games lately. But, for now, PC gamers will be getting first crack at the puzzles, although considering how dense Myst was, we wouldn’t be surprised if solving it takes a while.
