New ‘Into the Woods’ trailer finds Meryl Streep singing in a ‘Maleficent’ world

Could Disney's “Into the Woods” be a Christmas surprise for moviegoers and Oscar? Judging by the film's second trailer, let's just say we're pleasantly surprised. Here are five quick thoughts to ponder on Rob Marshall's latest endeavor before or after you watch the new preview.

First off, the best part of the trailer is it's not afraid to sell the fact this is in fact a musical. Even with the modern day successes of “Moulin Rouge!,” “Chicago,” “Dreamgirls,” “Hairspray” and “Les Misérables,” just to name a few, you'd be surprised how scared most movie studios are of actually showing musical numbers in their advertising. Oh, right. Like all the hidden numbers in the new “Annie” preview.*

*Yes, and we're well aware the “Into the Woods” teaser had zero singing.

Second, we're not saying she's in the Best Supporting Actress five, but is it us or does Ms. Streep sound much better here than she did in “Mamma Mia”?

Third, everybody realizes the world of “Woods” looks incredibly similar to the world of another recent Disney flick, “Maleficent?” It's obvious, right?

Fourth, Chris Pine's English accent ain't half bad.

Fifth, Johnny Depp's Wolf looks a bit more like a cat to us. Just sayin'.
