What would possess Bryan Singer to delete this ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ scene?

Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Jubilee (Lana Condor) feature in a lengthy deleted scene from X-Men: Apocalypse. It is so '80s it hurts. What possessed director Bryan Singer to leave it out?

X-Men: First Class had its faults but I enjoyed it a great deal because it had a different style and tone to the previous three X-Men films. It felt like the start of a new era. The '60s setting gave it a certain kind of charm that was immediately lost when Singer took the franchise back with Days of Future Past. Sure, that one was set in the '70s but it didn't really feel important as part of the overall landscape.

Being a lover of all things '80s, I wanted X-Men: Apocalypse to be dripping with nostalgia. The results were lackluster. You may recall Turner posting a still from a scene not too long ago on Twitter that wasn't in the film.

This new deleted scene, posted by the X-Men Ladies tumblr, will likely be included with the blu-ray release on October 4 and includes the entire mall trip.

Oh come on! That was so much fun!! Jubilee used her damn powers!!! Sigh.

While some of this did make it into the film, Singer explained to CinemaBlend why this extended version didn't make the final cut saying:

In the end, when you look at a film as a feature, it”s called ‘the collective experience.” And you find certain things that you loved so much in individual scenes, they somehow disrupt the collective experience. And so that was one area where I made a drastic reduction – well, not that drastic a reduction. It”s like a minute or two, or less. But there are some fun beats!

Buzzfeed had also recently posted a deleted scene, this one focusing on Jean's developing powers.
