Bjork’s Virtual Reality Experience Pushes The Boundaries Of Bjork-ness

In efforts to bring fans a more immersive look at her music and performance art, Björk may have finally outdone herself when it comes to sharing sensory experiences with her fans, as they are now allowed to explore her native Iceland and even enter her own mouth through apps, 3-D camera work and virtual reality. That’s right — part of the healing process after her breakup with longtime partner Matthew Barney has been to bring Vulnicura, the album that chronicles their relationship’s dissipation, into the next realm by exposing a variety of aspects of her life and demonstrating her isolation — several of the videos depict the singer, solo, in remote natural settings of her native Iceland.

After kicking off an international virtual reality tour in Sydney last month, where she premiered her fourth virtual reality video from 2015’s Vulnicura, the Icelandic artist visited Tokyo for the premiere of the Japanese lag of the touring exhibition. “Björk Digital: Music and Virtual Reality” includes a movie theater with two-hour long showcases of her videography, while fans are given VR headsets to visit Icelandic landscapes. Björk has also been incorporating cutting-edge technology into her outfits by sporting 3-D printed masks.
