“Toxic” was one of the biggest hits of Britney Spears’ entire career and of early turn-of-the-century pop in general. The 2004 track was known for its undeniable hook and an earworm quality that meant even if you didn’t like the song, it probably stuck in your head for a while. Of course, most people probably didn’t take the time to find out where that hook came from, which is why it may come as a surprise that “Toxic” is built around a hook from a Bollywood movie.

The film in question is called Ek Duuje Ke Liye, and the song is “Tere Mere Beech Mein” composed by Lata Mangeshkar and S. P. Balasubrahmanyam. The movie came out in 1981, which means that there were probably even people in India who didn’t recognized the hook when they first popped in their fresh CD of In The Zone. It wasn’t exactly a prominent choice to sample from, and it isn’t a direct, verbatim sample, but it certainly worked for the song.
As WhoSampled indicates, “Toxic” actually takes samples from two separate sections of the song and mixes them together. Regardless, if you want to thank/blame someone for that “Toxic” hook which drove you crazy (in either way) a decade or so ago, now you know where it comes from.
