Guster have been together for 25 years and released seven albums. In the world of music, that’s a tremendous success by any measure. However, they’ve not forgotten about the little people or the bad old days, when they were college kids just trying to hustle their way into gigs and hoping a bigger band would enlist them as an opener for local shows. As such, the band has decided to allow high school and college bands to apply to open for them on their upcoming tour.
The opening message on the application reads as follows:
Opening for national acts was a huge deal for us back when we were a college band named Gus. We were lucky enough to grab gigs supporting Jackopierce, Rusted Root, and Live before we even graduated from Tufts.
Getting in front of these audiences helped us gain the confidence to give “being in a band” a real shot. And we’d like to spread that karma, so we’re inviting college and high school bands to open for us on our upcoming November tour. Maybe we can even join your band for a song and vice versa? We’re going to make this happen at every stop on our tour between November 5 and November 21.
Aspiring bands have until 10 p.m. EDT on Sept. 21 to get their applications in. The application includes questions they took from an article entitled “Questions You Should Never Ask Bands.” In short, Guster is giving young, local musicians the chance of a lifetime, and they are having fun with it. If this isn’t what music is about, then what is?
