His name is Prince and he will forever be funky. If it seems like there have been countless tributes to the recently departed music revolutionary, that’s because there were. After all, it’s not like you can only memorialize a god once, right? Right.
The previously teased “official” Prince tribute concert now has a lineup to go alongside the event, as well as a new venue. Featuring the appropriately grandiose title of Prince: The Official Prince Tribute — A Celebration of Life & Music, the event will go down on October 13 at St. Paul’s Xcel Energy Center. Earlier chatter had it that U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis would hold the concert, but apparently that’s not happening.
As you might expect from a family (and possibly The Family) sanctioned Prince tribute, the lineup is pretty impressive. City Pages reports that Stevie Wonder, Christina Aguilera, Chaka Khan, John Mayer, Tori Kelly, Anita Baker, Doug E. Fresh, Luke James, Bilal, Mint Condition, and Morris Day & the Time will be among the acts performing and paying homage. To be honest, just playing a Prince concert from any era on the hockey arena’s Jumbotron would also do the trick, but having a collection of ultra-talented recording artists is a worthy approach too.
“The family is extremely excited to provide an opportunity for the world to participate in the tribute for our brother Prince,” shared Prince’s half-sister, Sharon Nelson. “This concert will be an event not to be missed.”
According to The Star Tribune, the concert is expected to raise more than $1 million for Prince’s estate.
