Remember the Rio Olympics?! Yeah, that happened! Some people lied about being robbed, America WRECKED it in terms of getting medals, and Katy Perry premiered a brand new song as the games kicked off. “Rise” is definitely more on the ballad side for Perry, but there’s definitely more pop confections to come from the superstar.
In the meantime, this week featured an EP release of “Rise” remixes and one of them came from electronica group Purity Ring. And their spin on the track changes it into something entirely new. The Canadian group took what was originally a stirring, soaring song meant for inspiration, and truly transformed it. Now “Rise” feels like more of an electro chillout tune, with knocking bass, busy drums and weaving synths.
While the original is meant to uplift, Purity Ring almost disorient; when Katy passionately sings “Don’t be surprised / I will still rise,” it seems like she’s fighting a tide rather than being swept up by it. While we wait on new material from Katy herself — or Purity Ring for that matter — this remix can easily satisfy both of those cravings.
The Rise Remixes EP also features redos from TALA and Monsieur Adi and can be found on Spotify and Apple Music.
