The question on a lot of Young Thug fans’ mind is whether he’s ready to release his debut album or not. Some will tell you he’s absolutely at that moment, but others might believe he’s got a ways to go. Regardless of the side you choose, Thug’s 2016 actions have to start being questionable with his third mixtape, Jeffrey, on the way.
Jeffrey will likely follow the formula of I’m Up and Slime Season 3: straight to iTunes, sell around the same amount, and be short. It seems that Lyor Cohen views this as a strategy that works. Making money off Thug is cool and all, but what’s the end game? How does Thug get bigger under the 300 umbrella? These mixtapes can only be doing so much for his growth. If this formula continues and continues, his fans will be happy because they’re getting quality music, yes, but how is it bringing in new fans? Discovery?
There’s a whole world out there for Young Thug to take on. His melodic flows seem poised for radio, so where’s the next big single? “Best Friend” did well enough to go platinum. How is that being followed up?
Until those questions have answers, let’s just forget about it and jam out to the new snippet from Thug’s upcoming Jeffrey tape.
