Colin Jost stopped by Late Night ahead of this week’s SNL and the talk centered on host Larry David. And what it sort of hints at is that Larry David and Bernie Sanders have been a natural match made in heaven. For Sanders, the impression by Larry David on SNL has gotten him more attention in the mass public. You can’t claim it has bumped his poll numbers, but it has certainly made him more notable considering David is one of the minds behind the greatest sitcom of all time. It’s like a reverse of the Sarah Palin/ Tina Fey situation.
And at the same time, David has Sanders to thank for sorta getting him a hosting gig on SNL. It isn’t like David wouldn’t be invited back after #SNL40 or is barred from the studio, but it also doesn’t seem like something he would do these days. He doesn’t need to do it and he seems content just making his way around Civil War battlefields and performing on Broadway. Then Bernie Sanders runs for president, Lorne Michaels makes a call, and now we’re making sweet music together.
Now, hearing Jost mention Sanders and David, knowing the past history of SNL and political candidates, and considering how close New Hampshire is to New York, you have to expect an appearance from Bernie Sanders on Saturday night. We know Larry David can play Bernie, but can Bernie play Larry David? If you believe what he told Anderson Cooper, it should be fun.
