Why J.J. Barea’s Comeback To A Taunting Thunder Fan Was Sorta Lame

Oklahoma City beat Dallas 108-89 on Wednesday night. The Mavericks were already down 23 at halftime, so this was probably an especially fun game for Thunder fans to attend.

One Thunder fan attempted to own the Mavs’ J.J. Barea during the blowout by pointing at the scoreboard, seeing as it was so heavily in the favor of the Thunder. And Barea had a memorable response.

You see, Barea was part of the Mavericks’ championship team in 2011, and with that comes free jewelry in the form of a ring. What Barea is essentially saying to this fan is, “I have a ring for winning a championship and you do not.”

Is it that sick a burn, though? Or just a basketball player living in the past? After all, that championship was almost five years ago. Maybe Barea should stop resting on his laurels and focus on the present, which currently features his Mavs getting destroyed by a Thunder team that saw Russell Westbrook ejected in the second quarter of a technical-filled contest.

Also, it’s a ring, not a trump card to be played until the end of time whenever you do something poorly. If Barea forgets to pay his taxes or pick up milk at the grocery store and gets grief over it, he can’t just ask the IRS man or his wife if they have rings. That’s not how championships work, especially when you contributed nine whole points per game to that title run.
