‘No Disrespect To LeBron,’ But Ohio-Born Steph Curry Wants To Bring First Title To Akron

LeBron James is Akron’s native son, and will surely go down as the greatest athlete to ever call the city home. In the 2014-15 season, though, he wasn’t even the best basketball player born there – that’s MVP Stephen Curry.

While the approximately 200,000 citizens of Akron are obviously rooting for James and the nearby Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals, a win for Curry would certainly be a nice consolation prize. And though he only lived in Northeast Ohio for a few fleeting months, the Golden State Warriors superstar says he wants to make Akron proud, too.

Clever.

James and Curry, it deserves mentioning, have grown close since the former took interest in the latter’s wild career at tiny Davidson college in the late 2000s. Curry says he even spent some brief time at James’ Akron residence a few summers ago, too. He’s just playfully ribbing his Finals counterpart here.

Everyone’s favorite superstars won’t spend much time guarding one another over the next two weeks, but this series will still be decided by the extent of their impacts nearly as much as anything else. And if the many quotables from James and Curry leading up to Thursday’s Game 1 are any indication, those influences will be just as large as they normally prove.
