Bioshock Infinite Ditches Watery Dieselpunk For Airy Steampunk

By / 08.12.10

If you were wondering how they were going to squeeze another Bioshock out of Rapture’s played out storyline, the answer is… they aren’t. Irrational Games has released the trailer for the third Bioshock game, Bioshock Infinite, and it completely abandons the underwater city of Rapture for a new city, Columbia, which floats through the sky of 1912. The game’s website, WhatisIcarus.com, describes it as:

Former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt has been sent to rescue Elizabeth, a young woman imprisoned in Columbia since childhood. Booker develops a relationship with Elizabeth, augmenting his abilities with hers so the pair may escape from a city that is literally falling from the sky. DeWitt must learn to fight foes in high-speed Sky-Line battles, engage in combat both indoors and amongst the clouds, and harness the power of dozens of new weapons and abilities.

Game Informer got to see some demo footage at the announcement event and reports that gameplay is largely the same as the earlier and you’ll still have plasmids (whether or not they’re called that) to let you throw stuff around. (It looks like you might be able to control crows in the same ways as the plasmid Insect Swarm and one of the fights allowed you to flip an opponent’s shotgun around at him and shoot him with it.) Also, Elizabeth’s telekinetic powers combine with yours (as hinted above) in ways like her controlling the weather to dowse a crowd so your electrical abilities are more effective or magnetically combining metal objects into large projects you can throw telekinetically.

On the game’s website, Irrational Games’ Ken Levine blogged that gameplay footage is on the way (natch!) and that one big difference in this game is that you’ll actually play as a more defined character than before:

You now play an actual character, and not a cypher who is unaware of his own identity.  You are Booker Dewitt, a particular character with an established history, with a voice you will hear as he talks to himself and others in the game.

That’ll be a welcome change. It’ll be nice to actually talk to someone in Bioshock for once.

Trailer after the jump!
